Brøset Violence Checklist (BVC©)

The Brøset Violence Checklist (BVC) is a 6-item checklist which assists in the prediction of imminent violent behaviour (24 hrs perspective).

The BVC can be used by all staff working with patients or clients. The BVC when used appropriately can help to assist in preventing unwanted behaviour.

NICE guidance NG10, on the short term management of violence and aggression, recommends using an actuarial prediction instrument such as the BVC (Brøset Violence Checklist) or the DASA-IV (Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression - Inpatient Version), rather than unstructured clinical judgement alone, to monitor and reduce incidents of violence and aggression and to help develop a risk management plan in inpatient psychiatric settings.

E-learning

An e-learning program for Bröset Violence Checklist (BVC) is available:

Apps and tools

The use of the BVC paper version is free. However, an agreement exists with Frenzs Software Development Company in Holland. They provide the QMS Re-Act platform which is a package of electronic mental health risk tools including the SOAS-R and the ERM. Their experience with this platform will ensure the highest technical standards are maintained for the scientific use of the tools. If you want to use the BVC electronically, please contact Frenz; react@frenzs.nl
